Where to Buy American Mahjong in Canada

If you’ve fallen in love with American Mahjong, or you’re just getting started, finding the right set in Canada can sometimes be a challenge. Many of the most popular American Mahjong brands are based in the United States, which can mean dealing with exchange rates, international shipping, duties and unexpected costs when ordering directly.

That’s one of the reasons I created Wind and Flower Co.

Wind and Flower Co. is a Canadian retailer specializing in authentic American Mahjong tiles, mats, racks, travel sets and accessories. Based in the Greater Toronto Area, we offer a curated selection from some of my favourite Mahjong brands, with prices in Canadian dollars and shipping across Canada.

What Do You Need to Play American Mahjong?

If you’re starting from scratch, there are a few essentials.

Mahjong tiles
An American Mahjong set includes the suits and honour tiles used in traditional Mahjong, along with the jokers required for American Mahjong. When shopping for a set, make sure it is designed for American play and contains the appropriate number of tiles.

Mahjong racks
Four racks make sorting and organizing your tiles much easier. Many American Mahjong racks also include pushers, which are used to move your wall into the centre of the table.

A Mahjong mat
A mat isn’t required, but once you’ve played on one, it’s hard to go back. Mahjong mats soften the sound of the tiles, protect your table and create a smoother playing surface. They’re also an easy way to add colour and personality to your game.

The current National Mah Jongg League card
The NMJL card changes annually and contains the hands used for American Mahjong play. Each player should have access to the current card.

Choosing an American Mahjong Set

There is no single “best” Mahjong set. The right choice depends on how and where you plan to play.

For a first set, I usually recommend choosing tiles that are easy to read and comfortable to handle. Once you’re familiar with the game, you may find yourself drawn to more decorative designs, different colours or larger statement tiles.

And yes, many Mahjong players eventually own more than one set!

At Wind and Flower Co., I select sets based on a combination of design, quality and playability. I carry options suitable for beginners as well as elevated and distinctive sets for experienced players and collectors.

Authentic American Mahjong Brands Available in Canada

One of the things I love most about Wind and Flower Co. is being able to bring products from exciting Mahjong designers and brands to Canadian players.

Our collection includes products from brands such as Oh My Mahjong, Middle & Main Mahjong, My Fair Mahjong, Mahjong Co., Hutch and Nook and other carefully selected makers.

Products sold by Wind and Flower Co. are sourced from the original brands. Authenticity matters, particularly as American Mahjong has grown in popularity and lookalike products have become increasingly common online.

Our selection changes regularly as new collections are released, favourites are restocked and new brands join the shop.

Buying American Mahjong in Canada vs. Ordering from the U.S.

Canadian shoppers often discover a set they love on an American website, only to realize that the advertised U.S. price is just the beginning.

Depending on the order, Canadians may also encounter currency conversion, international shipping charges, duties, taxes and brokerage or courier fees.

Shopping from a Canadian retailer makes the final cost easier to understand. At Wind and Flower Co., products are priced in Canadian dollars, and orders are shipped from within Canada.

It also means you have someone in Canada to contact if you have questions about a product or need help deciding what will work best for you.

American Mahjong for Beginners

If you’re completely new to Mahjong, don't feel as though you need to buy everything at once.

Start with a set you genuinely enjoy looking at and that you’ll be comfortable learning with. Racks are a worthwhile addition, particularly for beginners, while a mat can make your playing surface quieter and more comfortable.

If you’re unsure which set is right for you, I’m always happy to help. Because I play and teach American Mahjong myself, I can help you think about more than simply which set looks beautiful. Tile size, readability, portability and how you plan to use your set all matter.

Travel Mahjong Sets

If you play at the cottage, travel frequently or simply want something easier to bring to a friend’s house, a travel Mahjong set can be a great second set.

Travel sets typically use smaller tiles and take up less space than full-size sets. Some include portable racks, bags or other accessories that make them particularly convenient for playing away from home.

Wind and Flower Co. carries a selection of American Mahjong travel sets and accessories for players who want their Mahj to come with them.

Mahjong Mats, Racks and Accessories

You don’t need a completely new tile set to change the feel of your game.

A new mat can transform your table, while racks, rack sleeves, bags and other accessories make great additions to an existing setup. Mahjong accessories are also wonderful gifts when you know someone loves the game but aren't sure which tile set they would choose for themselves.

Our collection includes mats, racks and accessories designed specifically with American Mahjong players in mind.

Learn to Play American Mahjong

Buying the tiles is the easy part. Learning what to do with them is where the fun begins.

I offer American Mahjong lessons for beginners in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, including private group instruction. Lessons cover the tiles, setting up the game, building the wall and dealing, the Charleston, reading the National Mah Jongg League card, calling and exposures, terminology, game play and strategy.

My goal is to make learning Mahjong approachable and fun, so that you leave feeling confident enough to gather your own group around the table.

If you are not in the GTA, still reach out, I may be able to connect you with an instructor.
